Step 5 - Test the connection

Once you have installed an ethernet card on your laptop, connect it to the ISP highspeed modem using your ethernet cable.

Follow the instructions from your ISP to connect your workstation to the Broadband Service. The ISP may want you to power your Broadband modem off and back on after you connect the ethernet cable. Also, if you are using DSL, you may have to start the PPPoE software the ISP provided you (along with the userid and password they provided).

The ISP should assign a TCP/IP address to your laptop. You can check to see if you have a TCP/IP Address if you open a DOS WINDOW and at the C: type: IPCONFIG /ALL. A bunch of information should pop up similar to the following screen:

You can see your TCP/IP Address in the field labeled IP Address. And you should have server IP Addresses listed in the DNS Servers field.

In the DOS Window, at the C: type PING WWW.YAHOO.COM. You should get a response from the Yahoo website that looks like this:

If you don't have a TCP/IP Address assigned, or canNOT ping Yahoo, you may have to call your ISP and work with them to get connectivity to the internet. If you get a response from Yahoo, it means you are connected to the internet.

Make sure you can use your Web Browser to connect to Internet web sites (such as www.swatlantaga.com and www.yahoo.com).
